Ahmadis

From: The Encyclopedia of Canada's Peoples/Ahmadis/Milton Israel

Ahmadis – the shorter, more generally used form of Ahmadiyyas – are members of a Muslim sect whose origins on the Indian subcontinent date from the late nineteenth century. Since its establishment, the sect has been isolated from most of mainstream Islam and has frequently suffered persecution in the various countries where its members have lived. Aside from the community in present-day India and Pakistan, there are Ahmadis in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The community in Canada comprises immigrants from all those countries.
