The origin of the state of Bangladesh is traced in Ramkrishna Mukherjee, “The Social Background of Bangladesh,” in Kathleen Gough and P. Sharma, eds., Imperialism and Revolution in South Asia (New York, 1973), 399–418, while Aminur Rahim, Politics and National Formation in Bangladesh (Dacca, 1997), is useful for recent developments. A study by James Novak, Bangladesh: Reflections on the Water (Bloomington, Ind., 1993), presents an interesting discussion on the ecology, culture, and psychology of the people of Bangladesh, and the Canadian International Development Agency has produced a general background paper entitled Bangladesh: Country Profile (Ottawa, n.d.).

Some information about Bangladeshis in Canada is available. On the evolution of Bangladeshis in Ontario, see Aminur Rahim, “After the Last Journey: Some Reflections on Bangladeshi Community Life in Ontario,” Polyphony: The Journal of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, vol.12, nos.1–2 (1990), 8–11. In addition, readers should consult Abu Ishaque Mahbub Uddin, “Class and Ethnic Consciousness among the Bangladeshis in Toronto: Historical Bases and Current Patterns” (Ph.D. thesis, York University, 1985) and Marziya Yazmin “Ethnic Identity Retention of the Bangladeshi Immigrants in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area” (M.A. thesis, University of Guelph, 1982).
