The best general introduction to the Ismailis and their history is Farhad Daftary, The Ismailis: Their History and Doctrines (Cambridge, U.K., 1990). Edward Burman, The Assassins (London, 1987), is also useful.
Studies of the Ismaili community in Canada are few in number. Azim Nanji, “The Nizari Ismaili Muslim Community in North America: Background and Development,” in Earle H. Waugh, Baha Abu-Laban, and Regula B. Qureshi, eds., The Muslim Community in North America (Edmonton, 1983), 149–64, provides some insight into the group in North America. Farida A. Rajwani, “The Development of Isma’ili Religious Education in Canada” (M.A. thesis, McGill University, 1983), is valuable, as is Amin K.H. Jaffer, “Accommodation, Change and Continuity in the Shia Imami Ismaili Tradition,” Polyphony: The Bulletin of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, vol.12 (1990), 103–7.
