  1. Visit the following websites to learn about the immigration history of the Chinese people.
  2. Explore the collection of Chinese artifacts from the Multicultural Canada collection. Find some that capture what the early Chinese immigrants life was like in Canada. While browsing through the collection begin forming a theme for your newspaper spread. Start to think of which artifacts you could use to form topics for the theme and the supporting details for these topics.

    Sample Artifacts from Multicultural Canada

Chinese business damaged by race riot
    Citizenship Court
    Old Chinese note
    The unanswerable argument
List of numbers and occupations of Chinese in British Columbia
    Advertising in the Chinese Times

Consider the following questions as you choose your artifacts:

    • Does this artifact fit with my articles and theme?
    • Does this artifact speak for itself?
    • Do I need to add some text to help link the artifact to the article?
    • Do I have a variety of artifacts to enhance my newspaper?
    • Are the artifacts appropriately sized for my newspaper?
  3. Using Inspiration or a similar software program create an outline for your newspaper spread. Begin with identifying a theme and supporting article topics. Use the evaluation rubric to help guide you when determining what is required for your paper. Find artifacts from the Multicultural Canada collection to support and enhance your articles. Draft supporting detail notes under each article heading.
  4. Using Making the News, a word processor or similar software program create a newspaper spread focused on a story of Chinese immigration to Canada. Expand on your ideas outlined in Inspiration to complete each article for the paper. Remember to be creative. Add items such as advertisements or brief historically accurate editorials to enhance your paper. Save your paper as a PDF file for publishing.
