Multiple Collection Searching

Due to the large volume of material available on Multicultural Canada, searching is fastest when only one or two collections are selected. Use the check boxes on the left to select or deselect collections, or the button at the bottom of the list to select or deselect all collections.

Original Language Searching

For most collections, particularly ethnic newspapers, searching in the original language will produce more results than searching in English or transliteration. However, some newspapers are not full-text searchable due to technical limitations in character recognition. Please note that Urdu material is not searchable, while some Chinese, Korean and Japanese material is only partly searchable. Browsing the newspapers by date will produce more complete results.

Chinese Newspapers

For newspapers published and OCR-ed in the Traditional Chinese character set, one must use Traditional Chinese characters, not Simplified Chinese. There are many different tools that support searching with Traditional Chinese characters. A recommended method is to install Google Pinyin, which allows one to switch between Simplified and Traditional Chinese. It can be downloaded at http://www.google.com/ime/pinyin/. Several free online tools will convert Simplified Chinese input to Traditional Chinese, for example this tool: http://www.khngai.com/chinese/tools/convert.php. Microsoft Windows also supports Traditional Chinese input; follow the instructions in the Windows Control Panel under "Regional and Language Options". Another thing to keep in mind is that searching in Chinese is different from searching in English, in that a single word in Chinese has many meanings, so it is generally better to use the "as phrase" search option, instead of  "all of the words " or "any of the words".

Japanese Newspapers

Due to the poor quality of some of the original microfilm, some characters may be unreadable. In order to maximize search results, the use of kanji characters and the “as phrase” search option is recommended.

Recherche de plusieurs collections

En raison de la vaste quantité de documents disponibles sur le site d’Un Canada multiculturel, la recherche sera plus rapide si vous ne choisissez qu’une ou deux collections. Cochez les cases situées sur le côté gauche pour sélectionner ou désélectionner les collections, ou utilisez le bouton au bas de la liste pour sélectionner ou désélectionner toutes les collections.

Recherche dans la langue originale

Dans la plupart des collections, notamment dans les journaux ethniques, vous obtiendrez davantage de correspondances si vous effectuez votre recherche dans la langue originale que si vous lancez votre recherche en anglais, ou en utilisant la translittération. Cependant, il est impossible d’effectuer une recherche du texte de certains journaux en raison des restrictions techniques associées à la reconnaissance de caractères. Veuillez noter que vous ne pouvez pas effectuer une recherche des textes en urdu et que certains documents en chinois, en coréen et en japonais ne sont que partiellement consultables. Vous obtiendrez de meilleurs résultats en explorant les journaux selon la date de publication.

Journaux chinois

Pour les journaux fut publiés en chinois et ont été utilisés un processus de reconnaissance optique des caractères traditionnels chinois, vous devez utiliser les caractères chinois traditionnels et non le chinois simplifié. Il existe différents outils pour effectuer une recherche à l’aide de caractères chinois traditionnels. On recommande d’installer Google Pinyin, qui permet d’alterner entre le chinois traditionnel et sa version simplifiée. Vous pouvez le télécharger au http://www.google.com/ime/pinyin/.  Différents outils sont disponibles gratuitement sur Internet pour convertir le chinois simplifié en chinois traditionnel, comme http://www.khngai.com/chinese/tools/convert.php. Microsoft Windows supporte également l’entrée de données en chinois traditionnel; il suffit de suivre les instructions dans le panneau de configuration Windows dans la section « Options régionales et langages ». Vous devez également tenir compte du fait que la recherche en chinois diffère de la recherche en français ou en anglais, car un mot en chinois peut avoir plusieurs sens. Il est généralement préférable d’utiliser l’option de recherche « cette expression exacte » au lieu de « tous les mots suivants » ou « au moins un des mots suivants ».

Journaux japonais

En raison de la piètre qualité de certains microfilms originaux, certains caractères pourraient être illisibles. Afin de maximiser les résultats de la recherche, on recommande d’utiliser les caractères kanji et l’option de recherche « cette expression exacte ».
