Distribute copies of the worksheet Identifying Perspectives (attached below). Inform students that their challenge is to determine the collective mindset or perspective of the Chinese community in British Columbia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Students are to use documents from the Chinese Benevolent Association collection as clues to the prevailing values and beliefs of Chinese immigrants. Remind students that they must try to put aside current personal opinions regarding immigration to fairly determine the views likely held by another person.
