Description: January 12th, Tuesday
P.I The Chinese lin.es announced the necessity to unite all Chinese
in the western and eastern part of Canada to fight against the
discriminatory case in the laundry business. Laundry was the
most important and essential business of the overseas Chinese,
so chasing them out of this field would mean putting thousands
out of work. The conseruence would surely affect various business
operated by other Chinese.
The editor accused that the unjust reasons used by the Canadian
Laundrymen association to screen out the Chinese were:-
(a) to put the Chinese out of work so as to replace thej,,
by unemployed Canadians.
(b) hand washing method was non-hygienic.
(c) Machine washing woulu save tine as well as money,
The editor suggested that the Chinese could raise funds to
fight against the Canadians, or they could use one-half the fund
raised previously during the case concerning the prohibition of
employment of female whites in Chinese restaurants

Description: January 14th, Thursday
P.3 (1) Ambassador Lim of Vancouver announced that the Chinese hawkers
were in danger of being thrown out of business. He stated that
there were abundant hawkers in Vancouver, e.g. in the vegetable
business, there were 3^0 carts. Early in 1909, the City councils
had once tried to forbid selling along the street by the hawkers
before 9 a.m. and after o p.m. However, they failed due to the
law (no. 225) that the City government could have no authority
t
to limit the hawker's business.
Now the councils had reconsidered the case, intending to make
an amendment to the law (no.225) on the 21st of this month, they
tried to limit the business time of the hawkers as they wished
in 1909.
The Ambassador would like the hawkers to unite and discuss
the case. If there were any suggestions to solve the problem,
they could send representatives to the Embassy.
