Description: January 14th, Thursday P.3 (1) Ambassador Lim of Vancouver announced that the Chinese hawkers were in danger of being thrown out of business. He stated that there were abundant hawkers in Vancouver, e.g. in the vegetable business, there were 3^0 carts. Early in 1909, the City councils had once tried to forbid selling along the street by the hawkers before 9 a.m. and after o p.m. However, they failed due to the law (no. 225) that the City government could have no authority t to limit the hawker's business. Now the councils had reconsidered the case, intending to make an amendment to the law (no.225) on the 21st of this month, they tried to limit the business time of the hawkers as they wished in 1909. The Ambassador would like the hawkers to unite and discuss the case. If there were any suggestions to solve the problem, they could send representatives to the Embassy. P.3 (2) News from Ottawa about the difficult situations of some Chinese workers. There were ten Chinese going to the police station in Ottawa on the 3^th of Decemoer. They asked for food from the government, stating that they could not support themselves and their faruilies due to the war and unemployment. Consequently, the authority was willing to give them - 100 Ib. of rice, 20 Ib. of beef, 4 sacks of potato, 1/2 doz. cabbages
