Full text: THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ of LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA [The earlier records of this Diary have been lost] May, 1855 Tuesday, 1st,—Forenoon Snow. Wind S.E. to day a Bazaar was held for the benefit of the Patriotic Fund, the funds of which are directed to the relief of Widows, & Children of Soldiers fallen during the war. Sum col- lected about £70. To day the County Officers were sworn in, in addition to my office as County Treasurer, I received the appointment of Clerk of Licence. Mond. 7th,—Up to to day the weather has been extremely cold; wind generally from the N.E. Notwithstanding the severe weather some gardens have been made. To day Eliza Zwicker, daughter of the late Jacob Zwicker,1 died. Aged 17 years. Wedn. 9th,—To day a perfect Snow Storm. Wind N.E. The remains of Eliza Zwicker gets interred to day in the Mahone Bay burial ground, alongside her Father, & Sisters. The Election of Members to serve in general assembly, is to come off on the 22nd inst. Candidates are canvassing every nook and corner of the County. Sund. 13th,—The Bishop having arrived yesterday, an ordination was held in English Church, several Clergymen assisted in the Services, three were ordained. The Bishop delivered a very impressive Sermon. Mond. llfth,—To day a Confirmation was held in the English Church, 47 received the rite of Confirmation among whom were two of my Children, Henry,2 & Amelia.3 The service was very solemn, & impressive, the Bishop delivered a very affecting Address to the confirmed. Tuesd. 15th,—This is Nomination Day; Six Candidates appeared name- ly John Creighton,4 Benjamin Zwicker,5 Henry Jost,6 George Geldert,7 Henry Bailley,8 and Benjamin Rynard;9 the three former in the Conserva- tive, and three latter in the Radical, or misnamed Liberal Interest. A large number of people were congregated in Town all decked off with their party color'd Ribbons. The day was fine and warm. Saturd. 19th,—Arrived Schr. "Brilliant" David Seaburger, master, from West Indies to Lewis Anderson10 who is the owner.
