Full text: 56 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ Sunday, 26th,—No service in St. John's Church this evening in con- sequence of the Revd. Mr. Owen having had a fall from his horse, while on the road to Lehave, on Missionary duty, and having been sensibly in- jured. March, 1860 Friday, 30th,—Died at Halifax on Wednesday morning last after a long and severe illness Cecilia, second daughter of the late John C. Rudolf, Esqr., of this place. April, 1860 Monday, 9th,—This forenoon at 10 O'clock the Bazaar was opened at Temperance Hall, and notwithstanding the very unfavorable weather, the sum of £56 was realized; leaving after deduction of all expenses, the nett sum of £50 to be paid towards the Church debt. Thursd. 12th,—Potatoes are now selling in our market at from eighteen to twenty pence the bushel which is the lowest they have been since the rot struck. May, 1860 Thursday 3rd,—A "nigger" by name of Jeremiah Morris was yester- day evening committed to jail for breaking into the store of Gowe & Hebb at Bridgewater and stealing therefrom money besides sundry articles of Goods, the most of which were recovered; when taken he confessed all, and declared he would rather go to the penitentary than seek a living for that was hard work, and in the pententiary he would be found with food & raiment. He will remain in Jail untill the Court sits, next October. Monday, ll^th,—Destructive fires are raging; in this County large tracts of woodland have been rendered useless, and many habitations have with great difficulty been saved. Tuesday, 15th,—Cloudy, wind blowing very cold from N.E. From all appearances, a fall of rain was certainly expected to day, a light shower was however all that fell. Everything is very dry and vegetation is suffering for lack of moisture, having had no rain since the 14th of last month. Wednesd. 30th,—Godfrey Rudolf, son of the late John C. Rudolf, ar- rived here from England on Saturday last, on a visit having been absent about 15 years. He is master, & owner of a vessel and sails out of the port of Liverpool, England.
