Full text: 34 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ envious, jealous, and vindictive disposition, seeks, to deprive the English Church of the ground surrounding it, upon the plea of its being public property. Churchmen and those belonging to his own Church (Lutheran), are fully aware that nothing else but a solemn hatred and jealousy which lurks in his bosom against that Church, is the cause of the present pro- cedure. I feel happy to say there are not more than half a dozen of those evil designed persons, including our Know Nothing Members, who are en- gaged in this base transaction, the two Members, being ignorance personi- fied, are mere puppets in the hands of this man Ernst, as he pulls the wires so they dance. The Churchmen to day were glad to learn by Telegraph that this Church spoliation Bill met with the fate it deserved, having this after- noon been rejected in the House of Assembly, and consequently thrown out for the second time. Tuesday, 28th,—Supreme Court commenced to day. Judge Dodd47 presides. May, 1857 Tuesday, 5th,—Died this evening Henry Eisner, of this town, aged 38 years. Tuesday, 12th,—To day had two women, (Mrs. Joseph Eisnor, and her Sister, Mrs. Meyra), employed digging my Garden; when they commenced digging at 6 O'clock this morning, the ground was so hard frozen, that they had a difficulty in inserting the Spade, in an hour afterwards, when the sun rose higher, the frost vanished. Tuesday, 26th,—The birth day of Queen Victoria falling this year on Sunday, it was ordered by the Governor that the celebration should take place on Tuesday the 26th, (to day). In my capacity, as Trustee of Schools, I required the different Teachers, Male and female, to dismiss their schools, in order that the Children should have a holyday. June 1857 Monday, 1st—Died yesterday at LeHave, Miss Eleanor Koch, daughter of the late John Koch, aged 32 years, of consumption. Tuesday, 2nd,—To day an inquest was held on the body of a young man named Melman who was drowned in Lehave River last Friday evening. He was proceeding home, when in consequence of the darkness of the night he missed his way and walked over the bank. His cries were heard but no assistance could be rendered. Sunday, 1th,—This is the Anniversary of the landing of the first set- tlers of this place. They consisted of emigrants from Germany and landed here on the 7th of June in the year 1753.
