Full text: 24 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ although the Church has been in occupation of the square over one hundred years, and placed there by Government at the first settlement of the place. Some of these people, who are any thing but Christians, would from jealousy and envy, glory in seeing the Church rased to the round. Fore- most in battle, and at the front of this bigotted and jealous faction, is one Henry Ernst,38 a Lutheran by profession, and now prothonitary [sic] of this County, notorious for his vindictiveness and hatred to the Church, and who, if it were possible for him to do so, would swallow Church and Con- gregation. What turn this matter is going to take remains yet to be seen. Friday, 21st,—This being Good Friday, nearly all places of bussiness are closed, only one or two presbyterians has their shops open. Monday, 2^th,—This being Easter Monday, the little Boys as well as big Boys, are enjoying themselves Tipping Eggs. Saturday, 29th,—To day sold the House and 2 Lots belonging to the Estate of the late Mary Glawson, at Auction for £170. Wm. Dauphinee purchaser. Sunday, 30th,—Yesterday evening about 9 O'clock, a Barn belonging to Francis Young, on the Second peninsula, took fire, and destroyed two of the (!) three (?) tons of hay, besides 1 pair of Oxen 1 Cow a number of Sheep and farming utensils. Loss estimated at about £130. Monday, 31st,—To day I went out to the Centre Range to sell the Real Estate of the late John Hahn, deceased, sold about 170 Acres wood Land. April, 1856 Tuesday, 1st,—This is "All fools day", and a fine day it is. The Lehave River, and Mahone Bay Harbour is still frozen over, and as yet no signs of breaking up. Oxen and Sleds are travelling over both places in all directions. Tuesd. 8th,—Beautiful weather. Wind W. The snow has entirely disappeared from our streets, the road between this and Halifax has been quite impassable, in consequence of which the Mails were detained several days over their time. Thursd. 10th,—To day a Telegraph Message was received from Halifax, stating that the Council had thrown out by unanimous consent the Bill brought in for depriving the Episcopal church of the Square upon which it stands. These firey dissenters are therefore foiled in their base attempt to possess themselves of that which does not belong to them. Tuesday, 15th,—The Supreme Court commenced its sittings to day, Judge Haliburton presides. It so happens this year that the Sessions and Supreme Court meet at the same time, in consequence of which the Sessions are adjourned over untill next Monday. . .
