Full text: 50 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ Died this morning of Consumption Francis Zwicker, of Mahone Bay, aged 52 years, merchant of that place. Thursd. 12th,—The Election of Members to represent this County in general Assembly took place to day. Contrary to all expectation the radi- cal Candidates gained the election, but to the discredit of the County be it said it was through means most despicable and shameful that they were enabled to succeed. Wier, one of the successful candidates, flooded the place with Rum, having sent four punchions here and lots of it to other parts of the County, which was dealt out with unsparing hand among the people, every means was resorted to by these men to gain their ends, bribery was practised to a fearful extent, and last though not least those professing to be Ministers of the Gospel lent in every way a helping hand; these Min- isters, namely of the Free Presbyterian Church, Lutheran Church, and Methodist Church, preached daily and nightly political sermons from their pulpits, and not alone this but canvassed their people and urged upon them the necessity of voting for the Radicals, their conduct has been most shame- ful and a disgrace to their sacred profession. Numbers of persons have already left the Lutheran Church and no doubt such will be the case with numbers of other denominations whose Ministers have acted so inconsistent- ly; they will not submit to be taught by political parsons who make a farce of religion. Thursday, 26th,—The war which has commenced between Austria and Sardinia has caused a great rise in provisions and other articles. Flour is now selling at Ten dollars a barrell. Monday, 30th,—Peter Zwicker an old inhabitant of Mahone Bay was buried at that place this afternoon, having departed this life on Saturday last, aged 86 years. He was known throughout the whole County by the name of King Peter, and is supposed to have amassed a very considerable sum of money. June, 1859 Friday, June 10th,—Died this morning, on the first peninsula, Casper Mason, aged 45 years of the prevailing disease of Diptheria or Sore Throat, which was carried off many, both old and young during the last few months. I notice poor Casper's demise particularly on account of his being a great favorite with the pleasure going people of this town; he was a sober, indus- trious, and obliging man, and being a good pilot, acquainted with all the rocks and shoals, and the owner of a good and safe boat, he was in the habit of conveying pleasure parties on pic-nics &c. to the different Islands in our vicinity; on which occasions, being of a quick turn of mind, he always found something to amuse the company. His death is a loss to the com- munity which cannot be easily overcome. Sunday, 12th,—The remains of poor Casper were buried to day.
