Full text: 20 THE DIARY OF ADOLPHUS GAETZ Monday, 12th,—Arrived Schr. "Camilla", owned by Edwd. Young, and Schr. "Napier", owned by Jas. Selig, from Mackerel Fishing. Fares poor. Tuesday, 21st,—Very Cold; froze very hard last night This afternoon occupied in taking an Inventory of the personal property of John Heckman, Esq.,32 said property having been taken at the suit of T. & E. Kenny in Halifax. Valuation made £61. Wednesd. 22d,—Provisions remain still at famine prices, purchased to day a barrell Rye Flour at 42/6, the price being, before the war, usually from 15/ to 20/. Friday, 30th,—A number of fishing Vessels went to Halifax this week to make sale of their Labrador Fish, for which 10/6 only was realized being far short of the price obtained for the same quality of fish last year. December, 1855 Saturday, 1st,—To day a Son of William Parks, of Lower Lehave, was brought home from Halifax a Corpse; he died there very suddenly having been only two days sick. This being Market day, Geese were selling at from 1/8 to 2/ each. Mutton from 3d. to 3 1/2. Monday, 10th,—Last night it commenced blowing very heavy, wind from S.E., with rain, and continued the greater part of this day. Several of the Vessels broke their fastenings while lying at the wharf, but no in- jury of consequence done. Intelligence reached here this evening that the Episcopal Church at Bridgewater was blown down. This building had only lately been raised and boarded in. Tuesday, llth,—It being proposed to have a Concert for the benefit of Jane Bolman, a poor blind Girl, daughter of the late Dr. Bolman,33 a meeting for that purpose was held this evening, at Mrs. George Oxner's house, when several young ladies, and Gentlemen volunteered their services, accordingly several pieces of music, Sacred, & Secular, were practised. Saturday, 15th,—To day the Brandy, which had been seized some time ago, was sold at the Excise Office, and bought by James Dowling the forme'r owner. Thursday, 27th,—This day was appointed by the Governor as a "Thanksgiving Day", and ordered to be kept holy, in consequence of the success of the Allied Armies in the War with Russia, and also for the abun- dant Harvest yielded to our Farmers, & Fishermen throughout the Province. In compliance with Governors proclamation all business was suspended, and services held in the different places of worship.
